What to Expect: Singers of all proficiency levels are invited to join us for a week-long summer camp dedicated to musical enrichment and growth.  This vocal course offers an opportunity to have a fun and rewarding musical experience under the tutelage of UMBC music faculty member Janice Jackson, Director of the Jubilee Singers, and UMBC.  Daily experiences will include voice class, repertoire class, individual instruction/coaching, music theory and sight reading.  Voice instruction will emphasize correct posture and breath, healthy tone production, diction and articulation, expressive interpretation of folk songs, art songs and musical theatre songs, stage presence, poise and personal motivation.

Science and Engineering: Experimenting with Basic Concepts

What to Expect: This academic summer camp aims to introduce and reinforce the basic concepts of physics and thermodynamics to middle school students with a college twist. Some key concepts that will be explored are Faraday’s induction principle with an emphasis on alternative energy; laws of thermodynamics, with emphasis on solar energy and energy storage; laminar and turbulent flow, with emphasis on aerodynamics and wind energy; and the principles of optics and measurements applied to astronomy.   Each day, lectures will be accompanied with demonstrations, then reinforced by participants working in small groups to do hands-on experiments, including an electronic project and creating a solar pinhole camera. Activities include field trips to the Goddard Space Flight Center and another to Potomac Photonics, a 3D laser company.

LEAD: Leadership Exploration and Development

What to Expect: The world needs leaders now more than ever regardless of age, rLEAD is a curriculum of interactive  workshops and experiences designed to cultivate leadership excellence. Each workshop and experiences is specifically designed to help students enhance their leadership competencies as well as develop their leadership potential. Each LEAD workshop is grounded in the Seven C’s Social Change Leadership Model.

The Social Change Model examines leadership development from three different perspectives:

Individual: What personal qualities are we attempting to foster and develop in those who participate in a leadership development program?  What personal qualities are most supportive of group functioning and positive social change?

Group: How can the collaborative leadership development process be designed not only to facilitate the development of the desired individual qualities (above) but also to effect positive social change?

Community:Toward what social ends is the leadership development activity directed?  What kinds of activities are the most effective in energizing the group and in developing desired personal qualities in the individual?

Workshop topics will include; Leadership Theory, Communication Skills, Multiculturalism, Creating a Vision, Ethical Decision Making, Who Am I? and Collaborating with Difficult People.

Participants will learn:

  • To improve their leadership competence and cultivate their leadership potential
  • To develop practical application and increase understanding of leadership roles
  • To connect everyday activities to  leadership roles and organizational activities.
  • To develop the skills needed to have a positive impact on their community
  • To better understand how to apply leadership to their life

Belt It Like Broadway

What to Expect: Who doesn’t love a great Broadway Show tune? Learn to sing your favorite Broadway songs with power and finesse! Posture, breath, resonance, voice placement, character building are all areas that you will have a chance to learn and improve.
