Science and Engineering: Experimenting with Basic Concepts

Water ripples.

Sessions Offered:

What to Expect: This academic summer camp aims to introduce and reinforce the basic concepts of physics and thermodynamics to middle school students with a college twist. Some key concepts that will be explored are Faraday’s induction principle with an emphasis on alternative energy; laws of thermodynamics, with emphasis on solar energy and energy storage; laminar and turbulent flow, with emphasis on aerodynamics and wind energy; and the principles of optics and measurements applied to astronomy.   Each day, lectures will be accompanied with demonstrations, then reinforced by participants working in small groups to do hands-on experiments, including an electronic project and creating a solar pinhole camera. Activities include field trips to the Goddard Space Flight Center and another to Potomac Photonics, a 3D laser company.
